John 3 – You Must Be Born Again

This religious and educated man Nicodemus came to Christ but was not born again. He kept the laws and traditions of his people, but his heart had never been changed by God and really he was motivated to obey by things other than love for God. Thus, he was unfit for the Kingdom. Jesus said the Holy Spirit is the only one that can truly make us new people. This change is so real and powerful it is called a new birth, a spiritual birth. It is like receiving a new heart. Without it no one can go to heaven. It is outside of our control, but it is something we desperately need. Jesus’ teaching humbles anyone who thinks they can change or control themselves and become a ‘better person.’ It points us outside of ourselves, and makes look to Christ for mercy. Ultimately we find this not by ‘waiting’ for the Spirit to work in us but through the mercy at the cross received actively by repentance and faith.

John 3:3 – Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
