John 3 – Saved by Looking to Christ

Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again, but that was only the beginning of their conversation. As always, for a person to truly have lasting peace in their soul, and to know the foundation by which a man can be saved, Christ led Nicodemus to consider his death on the cross. As the serpent story was known to the Jews, Jesus here explains he is the fulfillment of this Old Testament shadow. He will be lifted up (by men at his death, John 8:28, John 12:32-34) and crucified to save any and all who believe in him. He took our sin. He became sin for us on the cross. Salvation was paid in full by Jesus Christ the Lord of glory, and he invites all to freely and simply believe on him for eternal life. The moment you truly believe and rest in Him, you are saved. Being born again has already secretly happened for the person who has leaned all their weight on Christ whether they realize it or not. Our advice to the lost to be born again must conclude with pointing them outside of themselves to the work of the Son of God.

John 3:14-15 – “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”
