Laws of God – 10 – You Shall Not Covet

To covet means to desire. Sin happens deep in the heart even before any work is done by the hands of men. This law of God is meant to show usthe evil and selfish desires that cause us to ‘love the world’ and neglect God. Until a man finds God as his treasure he will continually run after the world seeking happiness and satisfaction in earthly things. Sometimes men can clean up the outside like the lost priests and Pharisees in the bible, but who can clean and control the desires of the heart?

Are you a covetous, greedy person, seeking the blessings of this fallen world? Only Christ Jesus can save you from your own heart-idolatries and your own evil desires. Only Christ Jesus can truly satisfy us and end the lusts of the mind and the flesh.

Exodus 20:17 – You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.

Colossians 3:5 – Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
